The Powerful Hawk in the Middle of the Road

A little bit ago, I saw a hawk standing silent and still in the middle of a country road. I’m bummed I didn’t take a photo (Audrey created the photo for this piece using AI). He or she was right on the double yellow dividing lines. Traffic was basically at a standstill in both directions as each car stopped for a few moments so the those going by could pause to look at the hawk. Nobody honked.

I see at least three to messages in the the situation.

First, that the hawk, doing nothing but standing still, was able to bring traffic to a complete halt to me suggests that we can be powerful without doing anything or making a sound— in other words just by being. We are energy, and if we do nothing but vibrate with love, we can metaphorically stop traffic. Of course, how we vibrate determines what “stopped traffic” looks like. Our actions, thoughts, words, etc. only add to our power, but in the end, they are really a reflection of how we chose to vibrate. So how we chose to vibrate is at core what matters.

Second, and what I feel is a truly beautiful message, traffic going both ways stopped to focus on the hawk. Drivers going in different directions have different vantage points and see things differently. After all, they are going in opposite directions. To me, this can serve as a metaphor for the many differences people have with each other these days. Nonetheless, everybody agreed that the hawk was an amazing sight and worth stopping for. In other words, we all found common ground in the hawk. To me, this is a reminder that despite our differences, the vast majority of us can probably in some way find common ground. Maybe we all share the feeling of loving somebody… a child, a parent, a sibling, a friend… etc. Maybe we all like to laugh. Maybe we can agree that a still hawk in the middle of the road is quite something. I know it’s not quite as simple as this. But if we focus on our common ground, perhaps we can build from there.

Third, perhaps the hawk was suggesting some more time being still would might useful and perhaps also contagious as the hawks stillness led to the cars’ stillness.
